New San Francisco Tower Could Become Tallest in the West — And 11th Tallest in the U.S.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco’s skyline could soon see a dramatic transformation. A new skyscraper proposed for the corner of Market and Beale Streets is poised to become the tallest building on the West Coast — and the 11th tallest in the entire United States.
Reaching a height of 1,225 feet, the tower would surpass Los Angeles’ Wilshire Grand Center and San Francisco’s own Salesforce Tower, currently the tallest and second-tallest buildings in the region, respectively. This mixed-use development is set to include residential units, office space, and retail offerings, anchoring a full city block and blending modern design with historic preservation.
The project is being led by Hines, the same firm behind Salesforce Tower, and includes plans to restore original structures within the PG&E and Matson block and convert an adjacent office building into housing. While it won’t surpass New York’s One World Trade Center or the Empire State Building in height, it would still mark a major milestone for West Coast architecture.
Beyond its impressive scale, this proposal could signal a broader momentum shift for San Francisco’s downtown core — a statement of confidence in the city’s long-term growth and urban revival.
